James Kelly is the Founder and Head of Schools for Ascend Virtual Academy, a private, innovative learning institution serving grades 6–12. With a career shaped by transformative leadership, educational equity, and a passion for reimagining student success, Kelly created Ascend Virtual Academy to offer a flexible yet rigorous learning experience grounded in real-world connection and purposeful engagement.
Kelly brings over a decade of experience as an educator and school administrator. He has served as Department Chair for CTAE, Dean of Academics for Science and CTAE, site administrator for core and CTAE programs, and a Testing Coordinator and Instructional Technology Administrator. A former Teacher of the Year, he has led numerous initiatives that strengthened school culture, increased student achievement, and expanded access to high-quality academic and career pathways.
His diverse background also includes extensive work in healthcare education. As a former paramedic program director, healthcare science instructor, and HOSA advisor, Kelly developed a deep commitment to fostering career readiness and empowering underserved learners through high-achieving opportunities.
Kelly has completed graduate studies in Educational Leadership and earned a Master of Education from the University of Georgia. He is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Educational Leadership, focusing on systems improvement, innovation, and educational equity. His professional interests center on closing literacy gaps, improving student engagement, and ensuring equitable access to competitive programs such as dual enrollment, IB, STEM, and CTAE pathways.
As Founder and Head of Schools, Kelly oversees all academic, operational, and strategic functions of Ascend Virtual Academy. His leadership blends virtual learning with meaningful in-person experiences, monthly enrichment activities, and individualized learning plans that prepare scholars for college, careers, and life beyond graduation.
A transformative leader, Kelly is dedicated to ensuring that every scholar—regardless of background—has access to a supportive, engaging, and rigorous educational experience that honors their potential and charts a clear path toward lifelong success.
